Video Game Designers and artists are a hot commodity in the business world today. They turn their creative ideas, art, and music into a game that works and let?s gamer?s play.

You may find this hard to believe, but playing video games is a major first step to this winning career.

Although a love of gaming is a big priority, there are certain skills that one must also have to make it in this lucrative and fun industry. But acquiring these skills is not difficult when you are driven by passion for games and excitement.

Whether your love for games falls under sports, action, RPG, strategy or education, there?s a job that can fit your skills and passion.

The video game industry is strong and growing immensely and is a great opportunity for a career. Especially for artists and designers. As innovation and technology in art and design improves, so does the demand for these positions.

Every development company operates a little differently but there are some general descriptions for certain jobs. This article focuses on design and art jobs.

So what do designers do? They are the fun factor of the game. A game designer is in charge of making the mission, theme, and vision all go together to create a fun game. If the game is not fun, then the designer has failed.

Designing is a multi-faceted job from concept to feel of the game to game play. They work closely with artists and concept artists. Story telling is also a big part of the designers job.

There?s a winning formula for people like you, who have a passion for games, to follow in order to create your own intellectual property (IP) and pitch it. The great thing about the formula is, although it takes a lot of hard work, that it works! So, if you want to create and design your own video game from idea to the shelves, it is possible.

Designing takes passion, skills, creativity, and training. One important skill you?ll need as a designer is communication. They need to be able to communicate with the artists and programmers. They lead the development team and make sure it implements the game concept.

With today?s technology, grabbing the gamer?s attention is all important to the artists. During the different stages of game development, artists responsibilities can range from creating the concept of the game to drawing sketches of others ideas.

There are several pro?s and con?s to working in the video game industry, mostly pro?s. Let?s take a look at the good news of gaming and being a designer or artist in this industry.

Typically, designers and artists love the challenge of creating and this is an industry conducive to creativity. Getting paid to do what you love, play games, solve puzzles, is a definite pro.

Being able to combine art and technology is a definite pro as well. But there are more perks as well. Most game companies offer little perks such as free food, onsite gyms, casual work environment, no set in stone hours, and no dress code!

Okay, so the best perk is probably when you get a free copy of what you have worked so hard on to accomplish, your own game!

So, now a few cons to the industry. Game development isn?t always so fun. Often times when a milestone or deadline comes up, you have to work many late nights. A 12-14 hour day isn?t uncommon during some of these periods.

One other con to the industry is that sometimes games don?t make it to the shelves, They get cancelled and that can be very disappointing.

The good things about this industry outweigh any of the negatives by far. If you are interested in having a fun, passionate, lucrative, winning career, video games may just be the right business for you.

Every new position, be it a promotion, a transfer, or a move to a new organization brings with it a new set of challenges and opportunities to succeed, be recognized, make more money, achieve goals, and on and on. The one constant every new position brings is change ? change in your ?Universe of People?; change in the skills required to do the job; change in relationships with former peers, bosses, subordinates; change in accountabilities; and change in how the assumptions and behaviors you have developed will work in this new situation.

This article deals with people issues ? experience has shown that the key to success in any leadership role is based on effective people relationships and skills. Obviously, the technical skills and knowledge of industry, function and business are critical as well, but research clearly points to interpersonal skills as the key to success.

The purpose of this article is to help you identify critical relationship and behavior issues you will face in your new position and how to deal with them.

Key One ? How you establish your relationship with your boss is critical ? don?t leave it to chance, or circumstances, or to your boss. Be proactive, and do not assume you and your boss are on the same wavelength ? chances are you are not ? and chances are neither of you are aware of that!

Solution: Write down the top three to five measurable things that you believe will create success in your position - ask your boss to do the same ? then compare notes. Hint: agreement on two out of five when you first compare notes is fairly typical!!

Key Two ? Never assume the people that are working with you, for you or above you see things the same way you do ? because they don?t. Every single person brings a set of skills, attitudes and behaviors different from every other person, and they will see everything through that lens ? and it is different from yours. Perhaps not a lot different, but even little differences can result in big misunderstandings.

Solution: Changing the way people see things is very difficult. Creating a commonly understood set of results that all can contribute to and identify with isn?t easy, but it creates a sense of unity and purpose and direction and alignment of effort that overcomes the perception differences. Goals create understanding and direction and expectations.

Key Three ? Your expectations are different from the expectations of your boss, your staff, and the people that provide advice, counsel and support.

Solution: Express your expectations and be ready to modify and negotiate them ? clear expectations between you and your ?universe at work? are critical to success. The best way to express expectations is as goals that are consistent with and aligned with your organization?s goals. No more than three to five at a time!! And if your organization does not have goals to align with ? and it is amazing how many do not ? then set them up in your area of responsibility with visibility to your boss, peers and the people who report to you.

Key Four - You expect people to behave in certain ways, based on your attitudes, behaviors and values; and they expect you to behave in certain ways ? based on their attitudes, behaviors and values. You will all be disappointed to find that the behavior you observe is not what you expected.

Solution: Deal with results; every time you see a behavior that is not consistent with your own, reserve judgment and ask if it meets the needs and the goals of your organization. Remember solutions can come in lots of different wrappers, if you let them.

Key Five ? The only behavior you can control is your own ? if you think you can control the behavior of others you are either kidding yourself or spending so much time looking over their shoulders that you cannot do your job! The corollary to this is since you can only control your own behavior, you can only influence the behavior of others through how you act. People tend to return what they observe they are getting.

Solution: Make a choice and realize that you will be treated the way you treat others ? in 95% of the cases. There is an old saying? How you act shouts so loudly I cannot hear what you are saying.? Take advantage of the tools that are available that can give you a better understanding of yourself as the first step toward more effective interactions with others.

Bonus Key: When you start your new position, ask around and find out what problems need to be fixed. If you ask, you will be amazed how quickly you will find an opportunity to fix a problem of long standing while developing the trust and credibility that you need to succeed. And remember, the highest form of personal security comes through your accomplishments.

People relationship issues are the most challenging issues you will face in your career. They are also the most rewarding and the ones that can provide the highest leverage and the most opportunity to succeed. Work on building personal excellence in the people part of your work ? it has universal application for you!

How will I find my dream job on a cruise ship? Who will hire me? What do I need to know? Where will I get tips for getting hired? You will find the answers to these and other questions about working on a cruise ship if you read the following excerpts from Mary Fallon Miller’s book ‘How to Get a Job with a Cruise Line’. You’ll get to know how much they will pay you, what you’ll be doing and how long you will be doing it.

Imagine what it takes to operate a floating resort - a virtual city. That is what a cruise ship is. It employs experienced workers in over three hundred kinds of jobs to run this kind an enterprise. Here are some good tips for getting hired! Those people that are seasoned in the entertainment industry will be considered first - and then if you are proficient in such occupations as hospitality, tourism, restaurants and bars, teaching, childcare, sales, customer relations, gaming, marketing, fitness, health and beauty, medicine and healthcare, administration, banking, accounting and financial management, your skills will also be in demand.

Cruise lines hire dependable, competent people with outgoing, positive attitudes, students, career-changers, retirees - “people” people, who enjoy working with others. Your number one priority as a cruise line employee is to provide a safe, fun and memorable vacation experience.

To get hired on a cruise ship you need to: Know the players - Royal Caribbean International, Princess and Carnival are known as the ‘Big Three’, with the largest fleets in the industry. These employers should be at the top of your list. Choose jobs that interest you - Practice public speaking whenever possible, study a foreign language or get your CPR or Lifesaving Certification. Sell yourself - Apply early and often - but don’t pester the Personnel Office by phone. Send follow up letters and resume updates. Great tips for getting hired!

The cruise industry hires year-round and seasonally. Most employees work for a period of six to nine months with one to two months off. Many departments add staff for holiday cruises, and peak sailings through winter and spring. Doctors and nurses can find year round employment or assignments as brief as two to three months. Peak hiring times for youth counselors? Holidays and summer - perfect for students or teachers who love to travel. List your specific dates of availability (e.g. from May 15 to Sept. 1) so the Personnel Office knows how to schedule you.

The pay compares to good jobs ashore - plus you save a lot of money because most expenses are left behind. On board ship your room and meals are included. No more rent, grocery, electric, or gas bills! You can bank your salary and tips, or blow it all in ports of call. Sample current pay ranges: Casino Manager: $2,000-3,000 per month (revenue sharing.) Gift Shop Retail Sales: $1,000-1,500 per month (commission included.) Hairstylist / Beautician: $1,000-1,300 per month (tips included.) Shore Excursion Manager: $1,800 - $3,000 per month, plus commission.

If you really are interested in learning how to get a cruise ship job, you’ll need to know what you want to work at, find out who’s hiring, determine how to get hired, establish whether it is year-round or seasonal employment you’ll be involved with and how much they will pay you. Make a plan and stick to it!

Many people have heard the old adage that a cruise ship is like a floating city, therefore, it is not hard to imagine that it takes hundreds of employees to run and maintain a cruise ship. Think of all the jobs that have to be filled just in the community where you live. It is the same way on a cruise ship.

Basically, there are about 14 different departments on a cruise ship, with each department being responsible for hiring a particular group of employees to fill the jobs available on the cruise ship. The Deck department is by far where the highest paying cruise ship jobs are, as this department fills the need for captains and all other officers, as well as hiring security staff members and safety officers. The safety officers aboard a cruise ship do the same job as a policeman would on dry land.

The Galley department is in charge of obtaining employees to fill jobs such as butchers, dishwashers, cooks, pastry chefs, as well as any other kitchen staff. The I.T. department can offer jobs to those trained in computer systems, computer repair and the like. Those looking for cashier and boutique jobs would need to see someone within the Gift Shop Department. The Medical department is able to offer employment to trained and licensed physicians and nurses, while the Beauty department is interested in filling positions needing hair stylists, barbers, nail technicians and massage therapists. These are just a few of the departments that hire personnel for cruise ship jobs, there are many others.

A cruise ship also has the need for many other services, and look for employees who desire to be plumbers, repairmen, waiters, bartenders, dance instructors, black jack dealers and other casino workers, janitors, cashiers, bus boys, musicians, singers, spa and pool maintenance workers, laundry staff, fitness instructors and the list just goes on and on.

Those employed by a cruise ship almost always enjoy such great benefits as free meals and travel, free health insurance, medium to high wages, free room and board as well as discounted cruise travel for family and friends. A cruise ship job will also offer the employee the opportunity to see things, and to travel to far away places. Without a cruise ship job, many people would never be able to travel so extensively.

Around the world, the data shows that there are approximately 47,000 cruise ship jobs available every single year. No matter what your chosen profession is, there is a good possibility that a cruise ship may just need your services and expertise.

You can see what positions are available by visiting the websites of each one of the different cruise lines if you are interested in a cruise ship job. There are also job boards on the World Wide Web that specifically list jobs that are available aboard cruise ships.

Whether it?s the crammed cubicle, aggravating boss, annoying co-workers or maybe just your desire for more freedom, both financially and hourly, you?ve come across a mystery shopping job and thought to yourself wouldn?t it be nice to get paid to shop, eat, go to the movies, or even play golf. I mean those things are fun, and we know work isn?t fun, so does that mean it?s time to quit work and search the internet for mystery shopping jobs? Is it even possible to make money from mystery shopping, let alone a living doing it?

The answer is yes. It is possible to make a living doing mystery shopping. You would need to sell your home and your vehicle, because you will need to spend all your time driving in a car covered with advertisements, and spend every waking minute reviewing products and places. Yes it is quite possible to make a living with mystery shopping. However if you like your home, car, and current life style, I would not expect mystery shopping to primary source of income.

I don?t know how much you already know about mystery shopping, but basically it works like this; a company pays you to go into their store or business and act like a normal customer and then write a detailed report about you?re experience. Ok, so it sounds easy enough, but there are some things that you might not know and you probably should know before signing up.

What you might not know is that you need to write many sample reviews before a company will even consider hiring you. If a company hires you, you will generally have one job to do, so no matter how well they are paying or what you get to keep you?re only going to be doing it once. This is why it?s important that you sign up to an agency that will help you build your profile and can also tell you where the mystery shopping jobs are.

However, these agencies are where the ?mystery shopping scam? is revealed. Sure, there are reputable agencies out there, but there are way more fraudulent companies so you need to be carefully when you see those fancy advertisements or read those fun-sounding emails.

You don?t get paid a great deal, and you also don?t get reimbursed for everything, so how much you get paid is based on how you choose to manage the money. Basically you can?t go crazy and buy whatever you want and think you?re not going to have to pay for it. Generally a company will agree to giving you a certain amount and it?s really your choice whether to spend it all there or stand to profit most of it. Sometimes you will have specific instructions on what to get so you have to take that into account too. A few companies will even pay you only after you turn in a detailed report and receipt, so that?s your money you?re spending first.

Now that we have all the negatives out of the way, we can talk about some positives. It is truly a lot of fun to go out and shop the hottest stores and review the latest products. My wife and I just don?t consider it a source of payment, but more like a big discount or rebate on the things we like to buy anyway! We also go out to some extremely nice restaurants at least once a month, and pay nothing in the end! Even if we would have only used the database for one dinner out it would have paid for it?s self the first time, not to mention every single time we go out to shop, eat dinner, watch a movie, or several other sources of entertainment.

So there are many perks to mystery shopping jobs if you have the right mindset. We use mystery shopping jobs as a source of fun and entertainment and not as a source of livelihood like the advertisements would have you believe.

Ladders come in a variety of styles and heights, and it’s important to choose one that meets the needs of the task you’re performing. Safety should always come first when using a ladder, so it’s necessary to make sure you use the right ladder for the job. For instance, an extension ladder is suitable for reaching those high spots when decorating or cutting tree branches. But trying to reach up too high on a step ladder can be hazardous and lead to accidents. On the other hand, step ladders are ideal for those odd jobs round the house, from changing a light bulb to hanging curtains.

Extension ladders are used for all kinds of outside jobs, from professional window cleaning to painting gable ends of buildings. Aluminum ladders are commonly used, being lightweight and easily portable. However, a fiberglass ladder, although much heavier to move, is safer to use in the vicinity of electrical cables. Well-known manufacturers that sell a range of quality ladders include Werner Ladders and Wing Enterprises.

Inside the home, ladders come in handy in a number of situations. For instance, if you have high book shelves, fitting a rolling library ladder makes it quick and easy for you to reach those top shelves. Library ladders are generally made from wood, and come in a choice of colors and finishes to blend in with your décor. Another place where a fitted ladder comes in useful is in a loft hatch. An attic access ladder makes it simple for you to utilize that extra storage space in the roof.

Whatever your requirements, from doing DIY in the home or garden, to reaching high shelves, there’s a ladder to meet your needs. Choosing the right ladder for the job can help make your task much simpler.

There are many great places to work in America, however many people feel constantly dragged down by the lack of job opportunities they feel exist. Actually, there are many jobs available for those with the right qualifications. Many times it is just a matter of deciding what you want to do, researching what it takes to obtain that position, and setting a plan into place to achieve that goal. This is a lot simpler task than most people make it out to be. There is no job in the world that can’t be yours with the right training. In fact, most people can land a job by simply obtaining the proper qualifications, and having an optimistic attitude. The position probably won’t just drop into your lap, and it will take hard work and diligent effort. While the attitude part is something you must come to on your own, training for a career will take some effort. Online degrees are becoming very popular and are something to consider. In fact, considering an online IT degree may be just the right fit for someone looking for advancement.

Having an online IT degree is something people once overlooked as a position for the computer whiz at a not so common computer based company. With computers now playing such an important role in day to day operations, the IT positions are extremely valuable within most organizations. As the technology gap is bridged between software applications, and the internet, more and more students are earning their online IT degree, and profiting from the experience. Counting all the major online programs can be a dubious task, but no matter what the other programs online have to offer, the online IT degree is still one of the most valuable degrees one can earn, and will help you become a more profitable individual in the process.

The reason that an online IT degree is a direct path to great jobs is that the certification allows you to do so much that many people simply aren’t qualified to do. With this degree you will be able to work with computers and the internet in ways that most people can’t. If a company wants a quality IT professional to help them with their needs, the market rate is somewhere in the fifty to sixty thousand dollar a year range. With your online IT degree you will be eligible for that salary. Many of those working at companies today find themselves among the top paid professionals in the company with their IT certifications fully utilized.

Making a lot of money, and having a great job certainly helps a person’s life change for the better. Doing something you love is the single best way one can be happy. Most people surveyed in America simply do not enjoy what they do for a living, while those that have earned an online IT degree for the most part are very pleased with their job. This is because most people in these positions spend their days working with computers, and helping others adapt to new technology through troubleshooting. The bottom line is that having an online IT degree is one way to get a job that you might have once thought was impossible. You may find yourself to be one the highest paid employees in the company, and wake up most days ready for the challenges and looking forward to the workday ahead.

Usually, part-time nursing students are those who are interested in a nursing career but have other responsibilities that interfere with their abilities to attend regular classes. Of late, there has been a good rise in the number of part-time nursing students for a variety of reasons. Looking at the overall scenario, it appears that the looming specter of nursing shortage is the common driving force behind large number of students opting for part-time courses.

As per February 2004 projections by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, registered nurses (RNs) will top the list of 10 occupations that have the potential of the largest job growth in the years 2002-2012. It bears recalling that RNs have listed among the top 10 growth occupations in the past, but for the first time in recent history, RNs occupy the top rank.

BLS’ 10-year projections are widely used in career guidance and come in handy for concerned institutes in planning education and training programs and also in studying long-range employment trends. Thus, the BLS’ report that more than 2.9 million RNs will be employed in the year 2012, up 623,000 from the nearly 2.3 million RNs employed in 2002 has meant that many aspirants have now decided to study and pursue a career in nursing.

Unfortunately, there has not been commensurate increase in nurse educators as a result of which nursing institutes are unable to increase seats in regular courses. Seen in this backdrop, let us examine some common indicators behind the increase in part-time nursing students. 1. Second Career It’s true that the momentous events of 9/11 disaster have triggered a rush for second career in nursing, because people want a job in which they can make a difference in others’ lives. But while this trend has more or less ebbed over time, the popular choice of nursing as second career continues to rise on account of projected shortage of nurses in the coming decade.

Helen Taggart, a professor of nursing at Armstrong Atlantic State University, says, “A critical shortage of nurses is creating a crisis in healthcare that impacts both the preparation of nurses and the ability to provide quality care in the region.” In keeping with this daunting prospect, her association, the Coastal Georgia Nursing Consortium (CGNC) plans a news conference shortly to announce a special program on Nursing as a Second Career.

In most cases where aspirants have decided to opt for nursing as their second career, it is seen that they are already engaged in full-time jobs either in healthcare industry or in a completely alien field. Such career choosers are often reluctant to let go their employment and therefore likely to opt as part-time nursing students.

2. Admission Problem As noted above, the rising trend of requirement of qualified nurses has not translated into matching availability of seats in nursing institutes. This has meant that aspirants who would have otherwise gone for full-time courses, have to settle for part-time education in nursing. Since scholarships and grants are usually less available for part-time students, they need to find jobs ? often full-time jobs ? to run their personal and education-related expenses.

3. Higher Degree When a sector undergoes a period of high demand, lots of churning takes place, many of which act contrary to one another. The same thing is happening in the nursing sector. On one hand, there is a shortage of sufficient nurse educators because of which nursing seats are not expanding. On the other, qualified nurses who are already working full-time albeit in lower ranks, are pushing to up their qualification to take advantage of empty positions in high-ranked jobs.

In a way, this is inevitable because people have it in them to pursue higher goals, especially in situations that are now prevalent in nursing sector. On account of this, full-time nurses in various categories and disciplines are actively seeking to improve their nursing degrees by enrolling in part-time courses. Many nursing institutes have come up with innovative courses to cater to the long list of part-time nursing students who already have full-time jobs. Some examples are weekend courses, evening classes and even distant coaching. It is expected that such facilities will continue to maintain an upward trend in the foreseeable future.

Networking - The Route To Unadvertised Jobs by Robin Nicholson

Networking, or Informational Interviewing is one of the most valuable strategies for gathering information and establishing contacts. It can enable you to: Gain a firsthand impression of a particular employer or industry; get practical ideas and insider advice about how to enter that field; get contacts with other people in your area of interest; develop and maintain friendly relationships with your contacts; enlarge the list of people who can alert you to job opportunities.

“Networking” entered everyday business language in the mid 1990’s, and acquired a degree of mystique that it didn’t deserve. It is widely recognised now as an essential in business life and in progressing a career. To see how people understand the importance of networking, notice how many dedicated groups and networking clubs that have sprung up.

In this article we take away that mystique and explain why you should network as a key part of any career search. And how you should do it. Let’s get to the “Why” first. Think about hiring from the employer’s point of view for a moment. It is quite costly in time and in money, and it is risky and uncertain. The costs will come through in fees to professional recruiters or headhunters if the organisation choses to outsource the work. If they do it in-house, the cost come in the time of the people who have to write and place ads, deal with responses, arrange interviews, write to candidates, and so on.

So what would employers prefer in an ideal world? Just what you and I would prefer. Someone we know, or who is recommended to us by someone we trust. That way they come with a sponsor who knows how they work and what they can do. And that counts for a lot. That’s why a lot of companies pay bounties to staff who introduce new staff members (provided they join and prove capable.) There’s no real mystique to networking. Nor is there any special difficulty. Let’s take a look at: what it is, what it isn’t, and how to do it.

What is Networking? First off, it is not pushing yourself onto people who don’t want to talk to you. It is not like ‘cold call’ selling or telemarketing. Networking in the job search context, is simply talking to people you know, and to people they know, to get useful information and advice. Hopefully (as is the case so often) it will in time, uncover an opportunity that the rest of Joe Public does not yet know about.

It’s a process through which you build up your contacts. And it is reciprocal, not a one-way street. You have to give to receive. But the great part about it is that other people are pleased to enlarge their network too and by speaking with them, you have joined it. At some point in the future, assuming you stay in touch, you may well be in a position to help them with some information.

Here’s a real example of how networking works. Naturally, we have changed the names of those involved. Susan wanted to improve the amount of time she spends with her kids by leaving her hectic finance job and getting into school teaching. Through asking around the people she knows, she found a piano teacher who takes individual pupils and teaches at her home. They chat and it turns out the piano teacher has a friend whose daughter teaches school. Susan and the daughter get together on the phone a few times (in person would be better, but they live too far apart).

Susan finds out about what is involved, where to get the training, the upsides and the downsides to the job and so on. A year or two later, Susan is more than willing to advise someone else about “mature entry” into teaching….or for that matter, about her previous job in financial services.

Anybody can network effectively. You don’t have to be an especially out-going person. The key skills are: listening; asking open questions without making it an interrogation; and most important of all - taking a genuine interest in the other person. Never treat the other person just as a doorway to a “more useful” contact. We’d all resent being treated like that. Here are the main principles of networking: Most people you know will help you if they can. Most people are happy to give information, opinion and advice. Everybody knows somebody. We all know that one day we may be glad of a returned favor. Most of us like to consider we are knowledgeable about certain things and enjoy showing that expertise. Most people will be willing to suggest others to talk to, provided they found talking to you was an ok experience and didn’t take up too much of their time or put them in an awkward spot.

Getting started - Make a list of everyone you know and start with people you know quite well. That way you get practice with friends before you try the process with strangers. Explain you are NOT coming to them because you think they know of a job for you (that makes them feel put on the spot) ? but you would value their thoughts and advice on ???(your plans or whatever.) For some, you may be in touch for specific information. “John told me you have been in the pharmaceutical industry for some years?.I wonder if I may pick your brains??.”.

It is good to have something to kick off the conversation. For instance: ” I am thinking about doing (—) what do you think of the idea?”. You can ask for an opinion on the marketability of your skills. Be careful not to give the impression this is code for “know of any jobs?”. You must build some rapport, it must not turn into an interrogation or an episode of a quiz show. Give something to the other person. Now or later. We are not talking about commercially sensitive or confidential information here. But something of use to them. Maybe “Here’s an interesting article you may not have seen…” Ask for other contacts. Obviously not early in the meeting. But you can ask if “there is anyone else you know who might not mind giving me twenty minutes”. Do thank people who gave you their time. At the time, and with a note later. Keep them informed when you make your career move. Express gratitude for their help “which greatly contributed to?.” .

A few things NOT to do with your networking contacts:

Take up too much of their time; interpreting polite interest as “please talk more”;

Ask for a job - unnecessary and puts people in an awkward spot;

Overtly only wanting their contacts, not their views or ideas;

All about “me” and what I want.

It is never too late to develop a network, and it is a big mistake to let one decay when that new job comes along. Developing and maintaining good contacts does take some time and effort, but you can expect to see increasing returns from doing it.
